federal officials charge a d.c. council man with two felonies. harry thomas, jr. is has resigned and he is due in court in just a few hours. the countdown is on. four days until the first in the nation primary in new hampshire. so where do all of the candidates stand in the wake of the iowa caucuses. we'll find out. fox 5 morning news continues right now. now. take a look at the washington monument bright and early on this friday morning. it is january 6th, 2012.

today, we'll make it up to around 60. we are going with 58 in town. we could be wrong. it could be a couple of degrees warmer than that. >> i have to do a double take. i feel like we're back in october talking about this. >> after being in the teens, it will feel a lot warmer. >> let's check in with julie wright with a look at traffic. >> good morning. so far, so good with no incidents to report right now. the traffic is running smoothly each way at the wilson bridge. the crew in sky fox with us hovering above the beltway in greenbelt. they are above the beltway near the baltimore-washington parkway and again, traffic flowing freely out of andrews headed around towards landover. no problems to report here on this outer loop as you work your way north of parkway headed towards 95 college park. inner loop, that would be the headlights coming at you. back inside for your commute in virginia, 395 picking up some volume now as you work your way north of duke street.

no issues reported leaving landmark continuing out towards seminary road. it is still an easy drive for our friend traveling the beltway. increasing volume but still maintaining speed headed for the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. ic. this morning's big story, all making national head line. d.c. council member harry thomas, jr. resigned last night just hours after the feds filed papers charging him with two felonies. he now could do jail time for steeling government money and filing false tax returns. he is due in federal court in just a few hours. >> that is where sherry ly is with the latest on the restings nation and expected guilty plea. >> reporter: ultimately, harry thomas, jr. bowed to pressure when he announced his resignation late last night. today, he says he will be taking responsibility for his crimes here in federal court. the feds say he stole $350,000 in city funds meant for youth sports and that he failed to

report that on his taxes. in a statement through his lawyer, thomas said, quote, i will need guilty to committing two federal crimes. i am resigning my position as a member of the council effective immediately. i made some very serious mistakes and exhibited inadequate and flawed judgment. i take full responsibility for my actions. i am truly sorry. >> now, we face the scenario of him leaving the council, possibly going to jail, devastating his community, the people he represents, embarrassing the district and leaving us and his family scratching our heads, how could he have found himself in these circumstances. it is disappointing and sad. >> reporter: thomas is accused of using that money for his own personal luxuries, an suv and a

motorcycle. a special election will now be held to fill thomas' ward 5 council seat. he is due in court today at 11:15 for a plea hearing. he will likely face prison time. that is the latest here at the federal courthouse. back to you. the latest now in the race for the white house. four days now until the first in the nation primary and conservatives say it is time to rally behind a single candidate and quickly. they are hoping to stop mitt romney winning the republican nomination. romney is seen as a less than reliable conservative. romney, of course, former governor of massachusetts but he is getting snubbed from the biggest newspaper in the state. the boston globe endorsing one of his opponents, john huntsman. it is the second time the boston news opinion inner has endorsed a romney opponent. huntsman is counting on a strong finish in tuesday's new hampshire primary to stay in the race. rick santorum is shrugging off reports that a vote count from iowa's caucuses could be

wrong and could make him the winner. he says it does not appear to change the fact this he and mitt romney are practically tied. as for newt gingrich, he says he is willing to go before the naacp and urge blacks to doe panned paychecks, not food stamps. he made the statements at a town hall meeting from new hampshire. he regularly blasts president obama as the, quote, best food stamp president in american history. there may be new immigration laws coming our way. the obama administration plans to announce a rule change today that would reduce the amount of time illegal immigrants have to stay out of u.s. in order to return legally. right now, people would leave the country to apply for green cards can't come back for up to 10 years. the president is expected to announce that time could be reduced in their absence creates a burden on citizen spouses or parents. meantime, president obama made a rare visit to the pentagon press briefing room yesterday to outline his plans to cut the military's budget. he said with troops out of iraq and a gradual drawdown under

school. -- unseasonably warm, 58 degrees for your high. today is nice. tomorrow is nice. i think there will be a few more clouds tomorrow particularly the latter part of the day as that cool front gets closer. sunday, we are cooler but still pleasant. 48-degree. some rain likely on monday and then tuesday, back to 50. that is a look at what is happening with the weather. now, let's go to julie wright and get an update on traffic. we sent the crew north on the baltimore-washington parkway. they are headed up towards i- 195. we have reports of accident activity there possibly tying up a leap on the eastbound stretch of i-195 approaching 295. heads up there if you are heading out from the airport. bw parkway in good shape in each direction. no incidents to report on the b- dub itself as you travel to and from laurel. the lanes are open continuing your drive along 66 headed eastbound. for some reason, we can't pull up the camera right now. there it is. the lanes are open. the volume definitely increasing this morning.

in new york. good morning. happy friday. >> a good morning to you. >> the cycle continues. summertime, we pay more for gas. wintertime we pay less. why so this time around? >> a couple of things in play. we always pay more in summer because of the summer blends that refine ares have to do and that is more expensive. you have iran threatening to shut the strait of hormuz. ed a third of the world's oil passes through the strait. ate lot of trades are are saying that is the reason we will pay more than $4 a gallon come this summer. also, increased demand, china, india, the growing economies are sucking up what was it is excess oil supply and there isn't much room for error. >> did you ever think we would look back on the good old days of paying $2.50 a gallon. >> i remember stropping in my mom and dad's car for the pennies that had fallen between the seats so we could put a gallon of gas in during high school and back then, it was $1.25 a gallon.

officials are looking for the case of six middle school students who were apparently drinking before the start air school day. this happened yesterday at lunsford middle school in chantilly. a student saw one of their peers drinking on the bus and reported it to administrators. then later o one. kids who had been drinking went to the school nurse feeling sick. eventually, all the others came forward as well. the wizards tried to get that very elose uclaive first win. >> it looks like pern state may have found their new football coach. dave ross joins us once again with more on all these stories. >> a big day for penn state. time to turn the page and move forward. it look like they will get bill o'brien. this welcome back big deal. would be the 16th head coach in the history of penn state. they have abeen around for 125 years playing football. he remaces joe paterno who was fired after 46 years as the head coach. this is o'brien to the left.

with this blast of cold weather we have had, if it isn't scary enough, can you find a lot to be frighten bid at the movies this weekend. kevin mccarthy joins us now. we'll start off with what is supposed to be a scary movie. the devil inside, you saw it last night. what did you think? >> i didn't sleep for a week after seeing the original exorcist. i was like to afraid to go to my rome and go to sleep. as i was sitting there last night, i couldn't wait to go to bed. >> that bad? >> it was unoriginal, hack garbage. honestly, stay inside. don't go see this film.

they are trying to pawn this off as a footage movie. they are trying to make you think you are watching real old footage. they shoot it like a document rich a mother kills three people during an exorcism. so 20 years later, daughter wants it find out exactly what happened. why did her mom go down that crazy path. she travel to rome, italy to see her mom and while there, she gets involved in some exorcisms herself. this is a found footage movie. i felt like the director went to some magical film school and said i'm going to take a class on how to make a hackie, found footage movie. we've got old grainy footage, check. we've got old audio. check. i felt like of his going down the list. here is what i need to do to make the movie. it was uninspired. when you try too hard, it make it so unbelievable for the

audience that you lose yourself and you leave the film mentally in your brain. >> do you think it was an interesting concept that he just didn't execute well? >> it could have been done well had they had a better script ache better director, better actors. here is the thing. >> everything. >> on christmas day, require ontically enough, they released an up rated three-minute trailer for this movie that had the most violent, vile act that thapped in the movie itself. you watch that trailer, you've pretty much seen the entire film. of his watching moste, i could predict what scares were coming up because they ruined all of the quote, unquote scary scenes in the traileren save yourself $12. go online and watch the unrated version. i gave if a 0.5. the only reason i gave to a half a point is there was one scene where i jumped. it got me. as the movie ended, the entire

audience booed. i thought i saw tomatoes flying at the screen. >> you liked pariah. you gave this one a pretty decent score. what made this so good. this is an independent film. >> devil inside is opening up in over a dozen theaters this. is opening up in one theater and it is the best movie of the week out you have two. it deals with a 17-year-old girl struggling with her sexual and struggling with coming out to her parents. when she is at home, she is trying to be someone else that she is not. when she goes to school, she can be herself. it is this multilayered rich film where you are dealing with character struggles and raw human emotion and there is something to be said about that. when you are watching a movie and every single character has an art. but kim wayans, i want seen a performance from an actress in

a long time that good. -- i haven't seen a performance from an actress in a long time that good. when you can go into this style, you are so talented. this is a wonderful film, beautifully shot. i loved every second of if. i gave it a four and a half out of five. >> before we go, we'll do something new i'm dvd pick of the week. something that is out there. you like the warriors. >> i did. this is a fill that only made about $13 million in the box office. i think people were afraid to see it because it dealt with mma or usc fighting. that is just the backdrop. this is like rocky but like these amazing stories about these brothers and their father played by nick nolte. this is one of the most underrated best films of 2011. please see it. i guarantee that you'll like t if you are not cheering at the end, i don't know what is wrong with you.

student in the sixth grade class at benjamin tasker middle school in the district. they sent in a bunch of questions and we period you canally go back to those questions and pull another one up. steven asked how many different types of lightning are there? >> that is a good question. >> good weather question too. we like that. there are a bunch of different types of lightning. essentially, there are three categories, right. >> yeah be you got it. three categories and we can break it down into different types of lightning within the categories. >> first type of lightning -- utah most common. >> that is what i was going to say. cloud-to-ground lightning. this is -- when you think of lightning, this is what you see. >> that is the most common. cloud to cloud lightning. >> you do want to break down the different types of cloud-to- ground lightning. >> let's go through the three types. >> we can't go back to these

pictures again. >> okay. go ahead. >> there is four types of cloud- to-ground lightning. bead, ribbon, you taking notes. >> mentally. wait, it already lapsed. >> bead and ribbon. >> staccato. >> and forks. that is forks cloud-to-ground lightning you are looking at there. >> it pertains to -- how it looks is what it looks like. >> tell us about the types of cloud to cloud lightning. >> many people are familiar with it in the summertime. heat lightning. you see what is called sheet lightning. >> all right. now, let's get to the third type of lightning. >> this is most interesting type of lightning. >> upper atmospheric lightning. >> yeah. there you go. pretty cool. >> do we see this.

i'm assuming not. >> lightning can work horizontally or vertically but it can also vertically go up and out of the top of the cloud. this is something that has been relatively new phenomenon. it is a photograph. they've been getting a lot of the photographs from the space shuttle of all places. there were three types of this upper atmosphere lightning called sprite, blue jet and most importantly, elf. >> that look like a blue jet and. >> i think it is a sprite. >> there are other types, ball lightning and try lightning. dry lightning is lightning with no rain and ball lightning, i think we've talked about before. >> we've answered that. >> i don't remember learning all of that in school. >> unless you go to special schools like us. >> so my count was at 11. you guys mentioned 11 different kind of lightning.
